Baby Equipment Updates - Children's Car Seats
For many years pediatricians have advised parents that car seats can be turned around shortly after their first birthday. Now, the nation's largest organization of pediatricians is telling its members and parents that children's car seats should remain rear-facing until at least their second birthday and preferably even longer.
This comes from the American Academy of Pediatrics by research showing children under 2 are 75% less likely to die or be severely injured in a crash if they are in rear-facing child car seat. The academy also now suggests that children remain in a seat with a five-point safety harness as long as possible and should only move to a booster seat when the children exceed height and weight limits for the five-point harness.
Baby equipment standards are very important when purchasing and just as important when renting. Be sure to check with your baby rental equipment companies to ensure quality compliance.

Spring Cleaning Is Here - Donate Old Baby Equipment & Baby Gear
The birds are chirping and the windows are coming open. This means time to start that spring cleaning. For many parents, spring cleaning involves getting rid of old baby gear and baby equipment. Donating your baby gear is a great way to help the less fortunate and recycle. If you simply want to get rid of your baby stuff, The Salvation Army or Vietnam Vets will come to your home and pick up your donations. Some other great organizations are Project Night Night, Freecycle or you can check your local area for teen mother programs. Many young mothers would be happy to receive any baby equipment, toys, blankets, clothing or baby gear.

Baby Equipment Safety Tips
When buying baby equipment consumers are looking for safety and stability. It is important to look for the seal of approval from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (http://www.cpsc.gov), and to examine the baby equipment carefully to make sure the product is stable and free of safely hazards. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (http://www.jpma.org) has additional guidelines you may want to review. Here are some general tips to follow when purchasing baby equipment:
1. Examine all parts of the equipment by running your fingers along each part the baby may come in contact with. Rough surfaces can be dangerous along with surfaces that can get too hot in the sun.
2. Check all hinges, springs, and moving parts to make sure baby's hand, feet, fingers, or toes cannot get pinched or caught.
3. Make sure all small parts, straps, and coverings are fastened securely.
4. When assembling all baby equipment, make sure to follow the manufacturer's directions exactly as outlined.

How To Avoid Meltdowns While Traveling With Baby
Traveling with your baby can quite a task. Preparing lists, gathering everything necessary for the trip then getting to your destination. Oh yes, all Moms have been there. Planning ahead and making checklists can be very helpful to make sure you've packed all of your baby equipment. Here are some helpful tips to help ease your next trip.
1. Pack smart. Make sure you pack extra clothes, diapers, wipes, etc. Anti-bacterial wipes come in very handy in a dirty airport.
2. Get up and take a walk on the airplane. Kids and babies get restless after sitting too long.
3. Asking a neighbor to help. Many people love to hold your adorable baby while you fish around your bag for items. You'd be surprised at how helpful the average person can be.
4. Rent large baby equipment to be delivered to your destination. This not only saves money, but eases the hassle of lugging large items around the airport. Most baby rental companies will deliver car seats, cribs, booster seats, strollers, etc. directly to the airport, hotel or home.

New Baby Crib Safety Standards For 2011
On December 17, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) voted unanimously to approve new mandatory standards for baby cribs. The new federal standards will eliminate drop-side cribs all together. This will take effect in June 2011, requiring cribs being manufactured, sold, or leased/rented in the United States to comply with the new safety standards. This will stop the manufacture and sale of traditional drop-side cribs, require mattress support to be made stronger, crib hardware must be made more durable, and safety testing will be made more exacting.
All child care facilities and places of public accommodation, including hotels and motels, will be required to have cribs that meet the new standards within 24 months after the new ruling takes effect. All members of Baby Travel Pros Association are in the process of updating all crib rentals to comply with the new standards.

Are You Making A Big Car Seat Mistake?
Car seats are big business for new parents. Studies say that at least 80% of car seats are used incorrectly. The biggest mistakes people make are loose straps, incorrect installation, or using the wrong seat for their child's age/size. Car seats can be very complicated, so checking with sites like Safe Kids Car Seat Check can ensure your children are safe. Some of the biggest mistakes are:
1. The seatbelt was fastened over the child and seat, but the harness was not used.
2. Infant seats installed forward-facing, sometimes in the front seat of a truck.
3. Toolboxes and/or tools unrestrained in the back of the car.
4. Infants in forward-facing car seats.
5. Driving in parking lots with baby on passenger's lap.
6. Seat installed with anything other than the seatbelt or latch.
Even the most safety-conscious person can make one of these mistakes. Do your research and always double check when the car seat is moved.

Baby Travel Pros Is A One Stop Site For Baby Rental Equipment
Baby Travel Pros was formed to unite independently owned baby equipment rental companies across the United States and Canada. The association was founded in January 2009 after recognizing the benefits of establishing industry best practices and to provide renting families the added security of knowing member companies are committed to their child's safety. Although all member companies are individually owned and operated, affiliated companies demonstrate pride and commitment in providing safe, clean, high-quality baby equipment rentals. With a focus on customer service and satisfaction, members of Baby Travel Pros rent cribs, pack-n-plays, high chairs, booster chairs, car seats, strollers, toys, wagons, beach gear and more. Rentals are available for daily, weekly or long-term rates. Most members of Baby Travel Pros are available to make deliveries, pick ups, and drop offs to hotels, resorts, family's homes, rental homes and condos, and airport locations.
All members of Baby Travel Pros are licensed businesses primarily in the field of baby equipment rentals in the United States and Canada. We are a non-profit 501(c)(6) trade association.
The current board of directors and co-founders are Sarah Wyles of Toddler's Travels in San Diego, CA, Sarah Peters of Sweet Pea Baby Rentals in Phoenix, AZ and Raquel Quaid of Las Vegas Baby Equipment Rentals in Las Vegas, NV.www.babytravelpros.com/resources-for-traveling-with-kids.html
